Special Exhibition “OTAFUKU”

“Otafuku” is a traditional Japanese goddess and a symbol of good fortune, inspired by Amenouzume-no-Mikoto, the mythical goddess of dawn and revelry. Characterized by her plump cheeks and a gentle, welcoming smile, her name literally translates to “much good fortune,” making her a beloved lucky charm among common folk since ancient times. This figure traces its roots back to the famous myth where Amenouzume danced cheerfully to lure the sun goddess, Amaterasu, out of a cave, bringing light back to the world. Thus, Otafuku represents the belief that a bright smile can ward off misfortune and invite happiness into our lives.
